The Digital File:
The most important element of giclée printing is the digital file from which the print is created. Swanson Images will digitally capture your original work to create this digital file. With decades of experience in professional photographic reproduction, Bob Swanson will insure that your digital file is of the highest possible quality

Digital Capture (scanning):
Many original artworks can be scanned directly from the original, producing a high resolution digital file that is of the best possible quality. The largest size that can be directly scanned is 24 inches by 36 inches. Negatives and slides are scanned with a Nikon Coolscan 8000 at very high resolution to create at least 50 megabyte files with extraordinary clarity. Noise reduction software is used to digitally eliminate scratches and imperfections due to aging of the original.

Color Matching:
One of the most important parts of producing a limited edition of fine art prints is matching the colors and densities of original works to their reproductions. This is far from an automatic procedure done by machines. Different media show different colors in different ways and have different color gamut from each other. Thus the colors of an oil painting reproduced with archival inks on watercolor paper appear different and must be brought into aesthetic line with each other, not just with technology, but with masterful eyes and knowledge. Beyond that there are also issues of viewing conditions which radically effect the colors of an artwork and its reproduction (metamerism). We use a very sophisticated RIP software program with color profiles which are specific to each printer, ink, paper and lighting condition. This, combined with years of expertise, ensures the best possible color match from original to print.

Photography:
Large or dimensional artworks which do not fit onto a direct scanning device are photographed by Swanson Images with full professional studio lighting and high resolution digital cameras. This method can reveal the impasto look of original paintings as we adjust the lighting to reveal texture and brushstrokes. Photography is also ideal for artwork done on dimensional surfaces and for very large pieces.

Working with Your Files:
If you are uncomfortable sending your original work to us, you can have it scanned or have a transparency shot by a professional photographer. Color and gray control strips should be included with the final image. We recommend using Kodak's standard color control patches and gray scale. We cannot emphasize enough how important the initial scanning or photography is to the final result, and encourage you to allow Swanson Images to create these digital files for you. However, if you choose to create the digital files yourself, we urge you or your photographer to give us a call. We are happy to consult to insure the best quality giclée prints, and to provide a printed RGB color output swatch and calibration guides for your computer monitor on request. Additional fees apply for consultation services.

Imaging:
Occasionally, the digital files need image correction and touching up. Swanson Images provides the highest quality digital imaging services using Adobe Photoshop©, the software application that interfaces with digital image editing computers, high-resolution scanners, digital cameras and professional quality large format printers. It is the industry standard for professional image editing. Additional fees apply if image adjustments are requested.
