FAQ's

Printing:
The digital file and your final approved physical proof are used to create the initial run. These materials can then be archived for future prints. The size of the initial run, and the option to archive for future prints, is yours. Print runs can be as small as a single print plus file proof, allowing you to order prints as they are sold. Short runs of 5 to 10 prints at a time are more cost effective.

Future Prints:
Ordering future prints after your image has been proofed or printed is simple. Just contact us and have us to run your job again in whatever quantity you choose. We will pull all the job information from our archive and print the job. There are no recurring charges for you except the printing itself.

The Inks:
We use the highest quality Epson Ultrachrome © and Lyson© inks, with a the highest longevity (depending on the paper used). The minimum paper/ink combination we have have been tested to at least 40 years to 100 years life before fading when kept under proper conditions. These inks and paper, though pigment based and acid free, can be damaged by water and other liquids.

Giclée prints have much higher archival properties than traditional lithographs. Under normal lighting conditions, the inks will not show noticeable fading for at least 20 years on canvas, and over 50 years on watercolor paper. Treat your prints as you would a watercolor painting or fine photograph. Prints should be framed behind UV resistant glass and not exposed to direct sunlight.

The Surface:
To help you convey the feel or mood you want to express in a final print, Swanson Images carries a large selection of premium papers and canvas. Photographers tend to use photo base papers in matte, satin, or glossy finishes at different thicknesses and weights. These photographic prints look and feel just like traditional silver based papers. Artists typically print their images to acid free, neutral pH, watercolor papers that include premium 100% cotton art papers. If you are not sure what surface you want, we'll provide you with the options and even make recommendations based on the look and feel of your original artwork.

You might wish to print you work to a surface different than the original. Photographs printed on premium watercolor paper, for example, gives the images a unique look. You might wish to print an enlarged image on canvas, which can be stretched for a remarkable gallery display. With giclée printing, many exciting options are available!

Swanson Images has the following papers available. We can proof your image on different surfaces for a minimal fee, so you can see for yourself the possibilities. We stock mostly Epson Brand Papers and various other brands. Because of the vast variety of papers available and the need to test each one and calibrate it to our equipment, we try to provide a basic set of choices as there is much duplication of fine surfaces between manufacturers.

The simplest choices are between, smooth surfaces and textured surfaces and the weight (usually measured in gsm {grams per square meter}.
The least expensive and most common for matte photographs is Epson Enhanced Matte.. a light weight and smooth matte surface.

A much heavier paper with the same bright appearance is called Epson Smooth Fine Art.

Water color papers come in a wide variety and we have several manufacturers. Typically we have call for various Somerset Velvets (Lyson, Legion and Epson). Epson Textured Fine Art is also called for quite frequently when a more even texture is called for.

Canvas is available in various surfaces such as matte and satin. Various coatings for protection are also available for these canvas surfaces.

Of course, Glossy, semi-gloss, luster and other typical photographic surfaces are available.

All in all there are hundreds of choices, even satin cloth, transparency, tyvek, poster boards and more that these remarkable inkjet machines can reproduce on.

It is difficult to get samples but we can provide them on request, although, often for many papers we have to wait for manufacturers to provide them. So extra time must be allowed for this process. We are happy to assist you in making these choices.
